About MAVI
MAVI is an AI-powered finance and accounting talent platform connecting experienced global finance professionals with high-growth US companies.
Our team has experience across companies including Lyft, Ramp, and SoftBank. We work with professionals throughout the placement process, from role alignment and interview preparation through onboarding and ongoing career development.
The Role
We are looking for a Head Accountant to own the accounting function for a high-growth US company.
This is a senior, hands-on accounting role. You will be the most senior accountant in the business, responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the financial statements, the discipline of the close, the strength of the control environment, and the company's readiness for audit.
You will work closely with the founders, CEO, and leadership team, and a significant part of the role is translating accounting information into something people outside finance can act on — before they ask for it.
What You'll Do
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting
- Own the P&L;, balance sheet, and cash flow statement under US GAAP, and stand behind those numbers with leadership and auditors
- Own technical accounting positions — revenue recognition (ASC 606), leases (ASC 842), stock-based compensation (ASC 718), accruals, and capitalisation — and maintain the memoranda supporting them
- Lead the accounting team and manage external accounting, tax, and bookkeeping partners against agreed standards and deadlines
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, internal controls, approval processes, and reporting standards
- Oversee multi-entity accounting, consolidation, intercompany balances, and foreign currency translation
- Own the balance sheet, ensuring reconciling items are resolved rather than carried forward
- Oversee the transactional cycle — AP, AR, payroll accounting, and expense processing — to defined turnaround and accuracy standards
- Lead the annual audit or review process, including auditor management, PBC requests, and resolution of findings
- Coordinate US federal, state, and local tax compliance with external CPA firms and own the accounting inputs they depend on
- Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial reporting to the CEO, leadership team, and board
- Partner with FP&A; and department leaders by providing the accurate actuals,
variance analysis, and root-cause explanation that budgeting and forecasting depend on
- Provide the historical financials, schedules, and accounting support required for fundraising, investor diligence, and data room requests
- Lead the accounting systems roadmap, including ERP selection and implementation, AP and expense automation, and reporting infrastructure
- Build the close checklist, process narratives, and SOPs that allow the function to run without depending on any single individual
- Build scalable accounting processes that improve accuracy, visibility, and cycle time as the company grows
- Identify accounting and control risks early — revenue treatment, collections exposure, reconciliation gaps, customer concentration in receivables — and work with leadership on mitigation
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years leading and developing an accounting team
- Demonstrated ownership of the close and the financial statements on an independent basis, rather than contribution to someone else's
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, including revenue recognition (ASC 606), leases (ASC 842), and stock-based compensation (ASC 718)
- Experience leading an audit or review, including direct management of external auditors through to resolution of findings
- Experience with multi-entity accounting and consolidation
- A track record of building accounting policies, controls, and close procedures, or of rebuilding underperforming ones
- Experience serving as the senior accounting partner to founders, CEOs, or boards, including presenting results and defending conclusions
- Strong ERP experience with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online, or a comparable platform
- Experience hiring, managing, and developing accountants
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to work directly with US-based leadership
- Ability to maintain meaningful overlap with US business hours
- CPA, CA, ACCA,
CIMA or equivalent professional qualification strongly preferred
Preferred
- Experience at a venture-backed or PE-backed US company, particularly from Seed through Series C
- Big 4 or similar public accounting experience followed by industry experience
- Direct experience carrying a first audit or an ERP implementation end to end
- Experience supporting a fundraise or investor diligence process from the accounting side
- SaaS or recurring-revenue experience, including ARR, NRR, and deferred revenue mechanics
- Experience with US multi-state tax, international entities, or transfer pricing
- Familiarity with modern finance tools such as Ramp, Brex, Bill.com, Rippling, Gusto, Carta, and FloQast
Who This Role Is For
This role is well suited to an accounting leader who enjoys operating close to the business.
You should be comfortable moving between accounting detail and the broader reporting picture, building processes as the company grows, and working directly with senior leadership.
You are technically strong enough to reach a defensible conclusion without escalating it, and operationally strong enough to make sure the process behind it holds up next quarter.
You should be able to identify issues early, communicate them clearly, and provide practical recommendations rather than simply reporting the numbers.
The adecuado candidate is comfortable taking ownership, working independently, and building an accounting function that can scale with the company.
