OUR CAMPUSES
Ponce Health Sciences University has campuses in Ponce and San Juan Puerto Rico, St. Louis, Missouri and Tortola, British Virgin Islands. PHSU BVI is an ACCM accredited university founded in 2025 and is in its second year of training future medical students.
About The Role The Learning Specialist provides dedicated academic learning support to identify learning gaps, deliver targeted remediation, and strengthen students' study, self-regulation, and test-taking strategies. Through early, individualized intervention, the position helps prevent academic difficulties from becoming course failures or delays in progression.
The Learning Specialist works collaboratively with students, faculty, and academic leadership to develop evidence-informed learning plans, monitor progress, and promote effective approaches to learning in the health sciences. The role maintains appropriate confidentiality, documentation, and referral practices while supporting an inclusive and student-centered learning environment.
Essential Functions
- Conduct individual consultations to assess students' learning needs, study behaviors, time-management practices, and test-taking approaches.
- Develop and implement individualized learning and remediation plans with clear goals, strategies, timelines, and measures of progress.
- Provide coaching in evidence-based learning strategies, including active recall, spaced practice, retrieval practice, organization, note-taking, reading comprehension, and exam preparation.
- Support students in analyzing assessment performance, recognizing patterns of difficulty, and translating feedback into specific improvement actions.
- Deliver workshops, small-group sessions, orientations, and other programming on study skills, academic resilience, self-regulated learning, and test-taking strategies.
- Monitor student progress through scheduled follow-up meetings, documented action plans, and review of relevant academic performance indicators.
- Collaborate with faculty, course directors, advisors, and academic leaders to coordinate timely support for students experiencing academic difficulty.
- Participate in early-alert, remediation, retention, and student-success initiatives, providing learning-specialist expertise and follow-up as appropriate.
- Create, adapt, and maintain learning resources, guides, workshops, and digital materials aligned with the needs of health sciences learners.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student contacts, interventions, referrals, and outcomes in accordance with institutional policies.
- Use available data to identify recurring learning needs, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and recommend improvements to student-support programming.
- Refer students to counseling, disability/accessibility services, tutoring, faculty support, or other institutional resources when needs extend beyond the scope of learning support.
- Remain current with research and best practices in learning sciences, health professions education, academic coaching, and student success.
- Support institutional academic events, faculty development activities, and other initiatives related to learning and student progression.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Campus Administrator or Associate Dean in support of academic success and institutional operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates primarily in an academic and office environment and routinely involves individual student consultations, small-group sessions, workshops,
and collaboration with faculty and staff. The role regularly uses computers, learning-management and student-support systems, videoconferencing tools, phones, photocopiers, and other standard office equipment. The environment generally has a moderate noise level.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use a computer, and handle educational materials. The role may require moving between offices, classrooms, and campus learning spaces, as well as occasional setup of workshop materials.Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
POSITOIN/EXPECTED WORK
This is a full-time, exempt position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday. Availability to work occasional nonstandard hours or weekends may be required to support student and institutional needs.
TRAVEL
Candidates may live in the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico. Regular travel to BVI is expected for this position.
Required Education And Experience
- Master's degree in Education, Medical or Health Professions Education, Educational Psychology, Learning Sciences, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience in academic learning support, student success, teaching, academic coaching, remediation, or a related educational setting.
- Experience working with adult learners, graduate or professional students, or students in the health sciences is preferred.
Additional Requirements
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment when handling sensitive student information.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate documentation, and consistently meet established deadlines.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills; additional language proficiency is an asset.
