About the engagement

Elkwood is a Los Angeles based real estate development company overseeing a portfolio of residential properties held by multiple entities. We are seeking an experienced bookkeeper to provide ongoing accounting services on an independent contractor basis. The contractor will work directly with our Portfolio Manager, follow our written accounting procedures manual, and support a monthly close cycle. Services are billed hourly against the contractor's time records, with an expected workload of up to approximately 100 hours per month.

Services to be performed
- Enter vendor bills in AppFolio with correct coding, references, and attached invoices, and check vendor ledgers for duplicates or prior payment
- Prepare bill payments (eChecks) for management approval and release, and record payments accurately
- Reconcile bank and credit card accounts monthly for each entity and resolve variances
- Prepare journal entries for credit card statements, management fees, loan payments, and adjustments




- Review balance sheets and general ledger activity to identify and correct misallocations
- Clean up and bring current historical financials for the portfolio
- Save and file bank, credit card, and loan statements to the shared server
- Assist with year-end items such as 1099 preparation and CPA requests
- Prepare salary reimbursement and other corporate invoices
- Help maintain overall bookkeeping needs of the firm

Qualifications
- Five or more years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, ideally for a real estate or property management portfolio
- Working knowledge of AppFolio strongly preferred; experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software considered
- Solid understanding of bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger maintenance
- Professional written and spoken English; all systems, documentation, and communication are in English
- Comfortable working independently against written procedures and a monthly deadline schedule
