Animal Control Officer (ACO)

The Town of Spencer is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Animal Control Officer. Reporting directly to the Chief of Police or designee, this position is responsible for enforcement of state and local laws and bylaws regarding animal control in the Town of Spencer.





The Animal Control Officer investigates complaints from the public regarding barking dogs, dog bites and aggressive or dangerous dogs, and cruelty or neglect of animals. This position responds to reports of injured animals and addressing each instance as required. Responsible for stray animals and owner releases who are housed at the ACO kennel. The Animal Control Officer will also conduct investigations and make recommendations regarding problem animals, working with local police and fire departments in emergency situations.

The Animal Control Officer will prepare and present dangerous and/or nuisance dog hearings for the Board of Selectmen; enforce state and local dog licensing law, issuing fines when appropriate; and educate the public on responsible pet ownership and pet safety.

The successful candidate will have experience working with animals, especially dogs. The candidate must also possess Animal Control Certification, or the ability to become certified within six (6) months of appointment, and update yearly as appropriate. Candidate shall have Valid Class D motor vehicle driver’s license and good driving record.

This position requires agility and physical strength and may be required to work in inclement conditions and beyond normal work hours in response to emergency situations on a 24x7, 365 days/year basis. The position receives support from a staff of alternate animal control officers.

This full-time (40 hours/week) position offers a starting bi-weekly salary of $1,670.15, plus benefits.
