PhD position in Organic Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen invites applicants for a PhD position in Organic Chemistry. The project is part of the research project “CO2 Capture using organic materials in aqueous systems”, which is financed by Novo Nordisk Foundation CO2 Research Center (CORC), and the research will take part in the group led by Associate Professor Jiwoong Lee.
Start dates are 01.12.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project
The project will study CO2 capture using non-conventional organic materials. Our objectives include design, synthesis and evaluation of organic materials that are scalable and applicable in aqueous systems. One strategy, for example, includes facile degradation and/or modification of waste plastic and the employment of bio-based sustainable sources of organic compounds in order to produce efficient absorbents and adsorbents for CO2. These molecules will be evaluated for CO2 capture and functionalization for further applications in biological and chemical CO2 conversion reactions.




Who are we looking for?
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Chemistry with specialization in organic chemistry and/or organic synthesis. The candidate should be highly confident in written and spoken English. The candidates should be able to work independently and strive towards scientific excellence, be driven and self-motivated. The candidates should have excellent skills in organic synthesis with at least 2-3 years of laboratory experiences, and interested in working on mission-driven projects with “real world applications”. Experience in chemistry of CO2, CO2 capture, CO2 utilization, or polymer chemistry will be highly valued. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience with GPC, NMR, solid state NMR, TGA, DSC, and gas sorption.
