Duties
A Plumber does skilled work in the layout, installation, repair, and maintenance of sanitary and industrial plumbing systems, process piping, and fuel dispensing systems, including air, gas, water, industrial waste, gasoline, oil pipelines, and irrigation systems.
Salary
ANNUAL SALARY: $118,097 (flat-rated) (Department of Water and Power: $126,511 (flat-rated))
Notes: Salary may change at the start of the pay range; confirm starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized five-year apprenticeship as a plumber; or
- A valid journey-level plumber license issued by the Los Angeles City Department of Building and Safety; or
- Six years of full-time paid experience as a helper to a Plumber with the City of Los Angeles.
Completion of a plumbing program at an accredited institution may substitute for each year of experience lacking up to a maximum of two years. Education information must be included in the Education Section of the application.
Process Notes
- Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at filing may apply, but cannot be appointed until full experience is met.
- Positions require a valid Class C DMV license at filing for certain departments. Applicants with recent moving violations or major violations may be disqualified.
- Submit proof of apprenticeship or license as applicable at the time of filing. Documentation attached after submission may not be credited.
- For Requirement #3, a Verification of Work Experience (VWE) form may be required; instructions and form are available online. The form may be attached online or emailed within seven days of submission to

- Future bulletins anticipate all applicants having a valid journey-level plumber license prior to appointment.
