Staff Scientist – Deep Mutational Scanning

Job Title: Staff Scientist in Deep Mutational Scanning, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen

Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent staff scientist to support our efforts in Deep Mutational Scanning and Multiplexed Assays of Variant Effects, commencing 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Research Focus

The research group investigates how cells maintain protein homeostasis through the protein quality control (PQC) system and how defects in these pathways contribute to disease and aging. Activities combine molecular genetics, functional genomics, and advanced high‑throughput technologies to dissect mechanisms governing protein folding, degradation, and cellular stress responses. A central focus is the development and application of Deep Mutational Scanning (DMS) to systematically characterize the functional consequences of genetic variation at scale. By integrating DMS with genome‑wide CRISPR screening and other multiplexed assays, the group aims to uncover sequence‑function relationships, identify determinants of protein stability, and map cellular pathways influencing variant effects. This work provides fundamental insights into PQC networks and contributes to improved interpretation of human genetic variation in health and disease.

Responsibilities

- Clone large cDNA libraries, conduct genome‑wide CRISPR screens, and perform multiplexed assays to study the effects of genetic variants.
- Collaborate closely with researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds,



integrating expertise from molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and related fields.
- Support ongoing research activities across the group on an ad hoc basis, contributing technical expertise, troubleshooting, and experimental development where needed.
- Disseminate knowledge within the lab by sharing best practices, training colleagues, and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
- Contribute to the smooth operation and supportive culture of the laboratory.

Qualifications

- PhD in Biochemistry or a related field.
- Documented experience with large‑scale DNA library cloning, screening, and sequencing.
- Experience with flow cytometry and FACS.
- Experience with DMS and NGS data analyses and visualization.
- Active interest in PQC degradation and DMS technologies.
- Proven ability to envision, plan, and execute a research project.
- Good English language skills, written and spoken.

Employment Terms

Employment type: Academic research staff.

Working hours: 37 hours per week.

Duration: Fixed‑term position limited to 1.5 years (18 months).

Starting date: 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary: Determined by seniority with possibility of a supplement based on prior experience and qualifications; an additional 18.07 % is paid to the pension fund.
