Role Description This is a full-time remote role for a Data Engineer at GUST. As a Data Engineer in the GUST IT Department, you will play a pivotal role in developing, constructing, testing, and maintaining efficient and scalable data architectures to support university data needs. This role involves working closely with the Business Intelligence and Digitalization Lead and collaborating with other IT teams, including Data Governance & Security Operations and IT Operations.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about data engineering in an academic environment, aiming to enable data-driven decision making and analytics within the university.

Responsibilities: Design, implement, and optimize data pipelines and ETL processes to support data ingestion, transformation, and storage for various university functions. Using tools like SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Pentaho, or Talend

Build and maintain data models that support academic reporting, operational analytics, and decision-making.

Ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of data infrastructure and processes.

Collaborate with data analysts, the Business Intelligence and Digitalization Lead, and other IT stakeholders to provide clean, structured, and timely data.

Develop processes to monitor data quality, consistency, and accuracy, particularly for student, faculty, and administrative data.

Participate in schema design and data architecture planning.





Implement and monitor data security measures in collaboration with Data Governance & Security Operations to protect sensitive university data.

Support data governance practices, documentation, and data dictionary creation.

Stay up-to-date with new data engineering tools, methodologies, and best practices. Requirements:

Core and focus areas: Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Architecture, Data Modeling, Metadata Management, Data Warehousing and more.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

2+ years of experience in data engineering, software development, or database management.

- Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (MySQL, SQL Server).

Experience with on-premises ETL tools such as SSIS and other tools (e.g., Apache NiFi, Talend, Informatica) and data pipeline orchestration (e.g., Airflow).

Knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, GCP, AWS) and experience with cloud-based data solutions.

Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or Scala.

Familiarity with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).

Experience with version control systems, particularly Git.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Knowledge of DAMA - data management and architecture frameworks which outline best practices, principles, and processes for effective data management.

Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).

Knowledge of data warehousing and reporting requirements for educational institutions.

Exposure to data governance and compliance standards.

Familiarity with containerization tools like Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes.
