Summary of Role
At GHJ, our Tax Practice is comprised of over 100 professionals, the majority of whom have post‑graduate degrees in tax, law or business and have previously worked with "Big Four" accounting firms. Our dedicated tax team is specifically trained in dealing with complex tax issues for privately held businesses, including federal, state and local tax strategies, tax credit maximization, estate planning and international matters.
We work with our clients to find appropriate solutions to maximize tax benefits and savings, providing sophisticated advice tailored for each client. This position is a unique opportunity with tremendous growth potential, as we develop a high-net‑worth (HNW) practice addressing strategic wealth preservation and planning for future clientele.
Responsibilities
- Review tax information submitted by clients for completeness; meet with or call clients to clarify questions.
- Possess knowledge of tax regulations to answer client queries.
- Prepare or review personal, corporate, partnership, and S‑CORP tax returns of various complexities.
- Prepare or review amended returns of any variety and complexity.
- Prepare or review personal tax projections.
- Respond to tax notices and draft initial letters as required.
- Perform tax research projects.
- Complete S‑election and requests for accounting changes as required.
- Make adjusting entries and complete trial balances to prepare a tax return.
- Prepare tax accruals as needed when preparing corporate tax returns.
- Handle confidential client matters and preserve confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with proven experience liaising with clients.
- Self‑starter able to work independently and use good judgment.
Skills & Experience
- At least 3 years of experience preparing individual, corporate, and partnership tax returns, including complex and specialized returns and compliance with federal and multi‑state tax regulations. At least one year of experience using computerized tax preparation, planning, and research software.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field.
- Current or pending valid Certified Public Accountant license, or actively preparing for and passing the California State CPA exam.
